VELA
VELA
VELA is a monumental sculptural pendant defined by an elongated silhouette, tactile materiality, and the quiet movement of natural wool.
Its name draws from the image of a sail — a form suspended between structure and air. Like fabric held in tension, VELA appears both grounded and weightless, transforming a rigid architectural framework into a soft, flowing presence.
At its core is a hand-built metal structure, meticulously wrapped thread by thread with natural sheep wool yarn sourced from the Carpathian Mountains. The yarn is applied densely and continuously across the frame, creating a long cascading surface that softens the geometry of the object and gives the chandelier its distinctive sense of movement.
The upper sculptural element is formed by hand from Pleto Biocomposite — PletoStudio’s proprietary natural material. Finished in deep black, its solid, tactile presence creates a deliberate contrast with the softness and fluidity of the wool below.
The making of VELA is an exceptionally slow and meticulous process. Each section of the metal structure is wrapped and assembled by hand, requiring many hours of precise repetitive work to build the density, rhythm, and continuity of the textile surface. Slight variations in the natural fibers remain visible, preserving the individuality of each piece.
Light is concealed within the elongated form and filtered through thousands of woolen threads rather than projected directly into the space. The result is a restrained atmospheric glow, while the fibers create subtle shifts of shadow, depth, and movement.
VELA is conceived as a suspended textile sculpture as much as a source of light — an architectural object in which metal, biocomposite, and Carpathian wool come together through an intensive process of handwork.
Its scale gives the piece a strong spatial presence, while the softness of the fibers allows it to remain quiet and almost weightless within the interior.
